A fair amount of Romanian company data is public and free, straight from the institutions, and nothing on this page requires an account with anyone or a word of Romanian beyond what we translate for you here. This is the honest map of the free layer: what each official source gives you, and where the free road genuinely ends. All you need is the company's CUI, the tax ID explained in Romanian company numbers.

ANAF: tax status and VAT, free

The tax authority publishes, searchable by CUI, each taxpayer's current status: whether it exists in the fiscal registry, whether it is VAT-registered and since when, whether the VAT code was cancelled, whether it applies the VAT cash-accounting scheme, and whether it appears in the register of inactive taxpayers. For EU purposes, the VIES system validates the RO-prefixed VAT number. This is the fastest free red-flag detector in Romania, and the walk-through with screenshots of what the answers mean is in verifying a Romanian VAT number.

The Finance Ministry: financial statements, free

Romania makes company financials public at no cost: turnover, profit or loss, employee count, assets and debts, filed yearly and searchable by CUI. Five years of numbers side by side answers the solvency question better than anything a counterparty will send you voluntarily. Where to look and how to read Romanian filing line items is covered in financial statements of Romanian companies.

The insolvency bulletin and the courts, free

Insolvency proceedings are published in the Insolvency Proceedings Bulletin (BPI), with a free search of the parties involved; the procedure and its stages are explained in checking for insolvency. Separately, the national court portal lists case files by party name, free, covering commercial litigation, enforcement and much else; how to search it without false positives, names repeat, is in checking court cases.

Where the free road ends

Two places. The Trade Register's detailed data, the directors, shareholders and the certificate itself, sits behind ONRC's systems: the certificate is issued on request and paid, whoever asks, and the register's online service runs in Romanian with an account. And the UBO register stopped being public in 2022 altogether. So the free layer tells you the company exists, pays or does not pay its taxes, earns what it earns, and sues or is sued; the identity documents about it, the Trade Register certificate and the UBO extract, are paid at the source no matter who obtains them.

Free, fast, or both

Working the free sources takes an evening the first time and half an hour once you know them. If the half hour is worth more than 39 RON to you, our instant check reads all of the above in about a minute and returns a verdict report with a 0-100 score, about €8. The two paid documents come through the same shortcut: the certificate at 79 RON in ten minutes, the UBO extract at 149 RON, both electronically signed originals, both far below the €35-100 plus VAT that foreign resellers charge for the identical documents. The full sequence, free and paid steps in order, is the due-diligence checklist.
